5 Best Skills to Learn for Freelance Career

The question of which path to take is the most contentious one when it comes to freelancing and the first thing that trips up the novice is working out which skill is actually the most relevant to learn in order to become a freelancer. There are literally hundreds of skills out there and many of them will be rendered obsolete by AI. In this article I’m going to go through the 5 best skills to learn for freelancing in 2026, explain the benefits of each and who can work in each of these niches.

How to Choose the Best Skill to Learn for Freelancing
Before I go any further, I should point out that the best skill to learn for freelancing is not necessarily the one that is in highest demand. It should be the one that you’re genuinely interested in and that you’re going to practice for months. If you learn a skill you won’t be working in that niche for two weeks and even if you do become a master of it it’s not going to be worth your while.

In Demand 2026 Skills report we know that demand for AI skills has risen by 109% in just one year. The creative and technical skills that are most in demand are still in demand. The implication is that businesses aren’t looking to replace their staff with robots. They’re looking for specialists who will learn to work with AI and use it to make their work more efficient.

5 Most Demand Skills in Freelancing

1. Video Editinge70dfca256415c558601f07953312df0
Now everyone wants to be on video. YouTubers, brands, coaches, SMEs litteraly they all need content and the vast majority of that content is short. They don’t have the time to edit so the demand in that space is absolutely exploding in the Reels, Shorts, TikTok etc. verticals.

My experience: I got into this business and have been working in it for over 3 years. It does take a long time to learn the skill and build up a portfolio but it is absolutely worth it. There’s a huge demand for video content so there’s a constant stream of clients. Clients tend to work with you for the long term. My big advantage over all the other video editors I’ve come across is that I’ve learned to work with AI tools. My workflow is now very efficient and I’m constantly updating my skillset.

2. AI Automation and AI Workflowsimages 1
AI automation is one of the fastest growing niches this year. More and more companies are looking to streamline their operations and offload some of the work from their staff by utilising AI. The two most in demand skills in this area are AI integration and AI chatbot development. The report shows that demand for these skills has gone up substantially over the last year.

To learn how to work with AI you don’t need to know how to code at all. Start by taking some online courses to get a good understanding of how AI actually works. Then move on to learning how to construct prompts and how to teach a chatbot to do a particular job. That skill will be in demand across the board as organisations continue to adopt AI to automate their boring tasks.

SEO is about getting your website into the search engine results and therefore attracting organic traffic. Social media marketing is about promoting your product or service on the social media platforms to build brand awareness.

Thanks to AI, SEO will change massively. It won’t go away though. Search engines will still be there to attract users, just that they’ll be able to do so with far less experienced staff as AI will take care of the vast majority of the mundane tasks.

For people who like to get to grips with the various social media platforms and want to find out how best to promote a product or service.

Which Skill to Learn for Freelancing
The demand for skills such as video editing, AI automation, web design, digital marketing and e-commerce management is set to go up in (Upwork 2026 In-Demand Skills2026  report). That said, if you’re a beginner looking at which skill to pick to go into freelancing you shouldn’t necessarily go for the most in-demand skills. You should first of all look at what you enjoy and what you can actually do for the long term. You’ll need to put in a significant amount of time to learn in order to be successful in any one niche. And you shouldn’t be attempting to learn all five of those skills above in the first instance, just pick one and get started.
