Pro’s & Con’s of Freelancing

Although freelancing has emerged as a popular alternative to the relentless office routine, this way of working has its own advantages and disadvantages, some of which may be unfamiliar to beginners. Having worked in this field for quite a while, I am prepared to discuss both the positive and negative aspects of such employment. Thus, based on personal experience, I will identify the key arguments in favor of and against freelancing and provide a comprehensive overview of this type of work.

The Positive Aspects of Freelancing

The primary advantage of freelancing is the comfort of working from any location and the ability to choose the working hours. Moreover, this type of employment usually provides an opportunity to acquire a valuable skill that most companies fail to teach their employees, namely, selling one’s skills on the market. Indeed, working for yourself implies that there is no boss who supervise one’s work and check if the quality standards are met. Instead, a freelancer is personally responsible for every aspect of the job and has to ensure that their work meets the expectations of the customer in order to get paid. Furthermore, when the skills are relevant to the market needs, a person can earn a decent income comparable to the salary of a corporate worker while having more control over their professional life. Finally, a small but significant advantage of freelancing is that it helps understand how the global economy works, which is difficult to achieve when working for a company. In addition, this way of working allows a person to manage their schedule, which can help achieve a perfect work/life balance and dedicate more time and effort to personal development. Considering the significant number of advantages that freelancing provides, it is possible to suggest that it is a favorable environment for personal and professional growth.

The Negative Aspects of Freelancing

Despite the significant number of benefits that freelancing offers, there are some considerable disadvantages that a person may encounter. First of all, the competition in the market of freelance services is extremely high, which may prevent newcomers from finding customers. Moreover, the particular area of expertise may be oversaturated with professionals, which would limit both the scope of work and the size of payment. In addition, unlike in a corporate setting, where employees can see a clear path of promotion and an opportunity to climb up the hierarchy, freelancing offers no such possibilities. Finally, when working freelance, one has to deal with the constant stress of meeting the customer’s expectations and the fear of being deceived by a client intentionally setting low prices and not paying on time. Thus, the lack of stability and regular income is a major disadvantage of such employment.

Personal Opinion

Having identified the main arguments for and against freelancing, it is possible to conclude that they are both compelling and contradictory in certain ways. However, based on my personal experience, I would still suggest that freelancing is more beneficial than not because it offers plenty of opportunities while introducing a person to a wide range of valuable skills. Although it requires patience and time to develop such competencies, working freelance provides a great sense of accomplishment when one manages to overcome the initial barriers and start making a stable income. Therefore, when considering whether to embark on this career path, beginners should keep in mind the crucial importance of patience and realistic expectations regarding both the level of income and the scope of work.
