Freelancing in Pakistan
Freelancing in Pakistan is not as hard as one could imagine. There is no need for a high investment or any specific gear to get started. What one needs is time and a valuable skill to offer. Apart from time and skill, one must continuously learn and update their knowledge about the specific field they are freelancing in. A freelancer must realize that the game is dynamic, and there is always something new. Upgrading one’s toolset and knowledge is an integral part of a successful freelancing career. Another significant advantage of freelancing is that one could earn in foreign currency. This has always been an attraction for Pakistani freelancers as working with foreign clients could be a reliable source of income. However, the amount of money earned depends on the above mentioned parameters like skill, portfolio, and experience.
Freelance in Video Editing
When it comes to deciding what skill should one acquire to start a career in freelancing, the demand for video editors is quite high. The number of video editors in Pakistan has increased exponentially. Video content is in high demand these days, with social media and YouTubs being the primary source of video content creation and consumption. As a beginner, I started exploring my options in the freelancing world and got attracted by the lucrative offers video editors had access to. I realized through my journey that instead of having ten skills, each at a decent but average level, it is better to specialize in one skill and be the best in that niche. Once someone gets to the level of being the best in a specific skill, the freelancing world starts rewarding them in equal measure. But, to reach that level, one needs to invest time and effort in learning and upgrading one’s skills constantly. Apart from learning the skill or the craft, a freelancer must also update themselves with the latest trends and developments in their specific field. One also needs to learn how to communicate with clients effectively, convey the information one is required to deliver, prepare a presentation-worthy portfolio, and much more. The first project one does might not fetch good money, and one might need to explore multiple clients before landing a consistent and reliable project. But these initial endeavors teach a lot about the freelancing world and what one needs to do to make a mark in it.
Future of Freelancing
I think that the future of freelancing seems great. With more and more companies going online and relying on online services for their growth, the demand for freelancers is only going to increase. There are many fields in which freelancing has and will see exponential growth in the coming years. Video editing, graphic design, web development, digital marketing, AI content writing, and social media are some of the most prominent areas right now. However, I feel that the competition is also rising, making it harder and harder to sustain one’s earnings. Not just anybody can just pick up a skill and start earning right away. In fact, with hundreds of thousands of people joining the freelance platform every month, the bar is raised higher with every passing day. One must be determined and committed to constantly better one’s skills, keep updated with trending topics and the recent developments in one’s field, and most importantly, have a record of one’s work to show rather than simply stating that one is good at something. This is the point where most people fail: thinking that they can keep doing the same thing over and over again and eventually see massive improvement. If you are a Pakistani freelancer, then I feel that you have a chance to shine right now. You no longer have to worry about local clients or being underpaid for your work. You can reach out to people from the US, the UK, Europe, and many other places and demand better payment since you would be working in foreign currency. Coming back to my own experience, I feel that one must have realistic expectations while freelancing in Pakistan. While it is possible to see exponential growth in one’s earnings with time, most newcomers give up too early because they expected to see results right away. People who have seen consistent results in their careers are those who took freelancing seriously and bettered their skills rather than randomly applying for jobs and then quitting after a few months due to ‘lack of interest.’
Something that I feel people ignore is the importance of patience in freelancing. You may not necessarily need skill to begin with, but you must be better than the average person out there.
