How to make money on Upwork

Upwork for Beginners
Upwork is one of the well known freelance websites in the world. Many Pakistani freelancers join Upwork to reach clients from countries. Upwork has a work culture than Fiverr and beginners often make common mistakes when they set up profiles and proposals because no one guides them. In this post I will talk about Upwork from the beginning to how to get paid.

What Is Upwork?
Upwork is a freelancing marketplace where clients post projects and freelancers bid by sending proposals. The client reviews the proposals interviews the shortlisted candidates and hires the person who seems the fit. On Upwork you approach the client, not the reverse. Unlike Fiverr Upwork is a platform for long‑term and serious projects.

Why Upwork Is Good for Freelancers?
Upwork offers benefits, some of which are mentioned below:
▸Long term clients: Because projects are long term the chances of keeping a client for two or more years are very high.
▸Higher budgets: The budgets set by clients are usually high because it is a long term contract.
▸Payment security: Contracts can be hourly with a tracked timer or fixed price with milestones that you complete to get paid.
▸No capping: As your profile and reviews improve you can raise your rates anytime with no cap.
▸Serious clients: Upwork filters out clients who do not want a serious long term collaboration.

From my experience, Upwork and similar platforms value quality proposals over quantity. Therefore it is better to spend time writing a pitch that explains why you are the fit for the project rather than copy pasting.

Upwork Fees and Commission in 2026

This is the part for every beginner. Upwork does not charge a joining fee, unlike Fiverr. However there are charges that I will discuss below:
▸Service fee: Upwork keeps a percentage of 0 to 15 percent of the money you receive. Upwork shows this amount before you submit a proposal. It stays the same for every contract.
▸Connects: Connects are a currency that Upwork uses to let you send proposals to clients. You can buy Connects for fifteen cents each and the number of Connects needed for a proposal changes from project to project. Upwork also gives you ten Connects each month if you have a Basic Free account.
How to Create a Strong Upwork Profile
▸ Your profile picture should be decent and not child friendly.
▸The headline should clearly state your niche for example ‘YouTube video editor for creators.’
▸The subheadline should be a description of the services you offer.
▸The portfolio section should contain your work samples.
▸Add skills that’re relevant to the work you do.
▸ Fill out the remaining sections because a complete profile gives you credibility more than an one.

How to Get clients on Upwork
Getting your job is the task for a beginner freelancer. The tips below work for everyone, including Upwork, Fiverr and other platforms.
▸Search for jobs that match your skills. Do not apply to projects.
▸Always read the job description carefully. The client will know if you did not read one line.
▸Write a custom proposal. Begin with what the client needs and how you will solve their problem. Mention one portfolio sample. Keep the proposal short and simple using a paragraphs.
▸Ask one question to show the client that you are interested and have read their description.
▸Apply to the job early. Older jobs already have proposals.
▸Be patient because new freelancers often receive proposals before they get their first job.

Important note:
You should apply to a maximum of two Upwork jobs each day. Don’t use your Connects on every job you come across. Before you send a proposal take the time to look at the client’s profile. Check where they are located how much they have spent on Upwork the reviews they have received their rating, how jobs they have posted and their history of hiring. If the client is in the US has a history of hiring has spent more than $500K on Upwork and has good ratings and reviews that is a good sign. The important thing is to not use the same basic proposal for every job. Create a proposal, for each client based on their job post. Show that you know what they need and explain in a way how you can help.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
I have seen these mistakes from my experience and from watching others. A new freelancer should avoid these errors:

▸ Do not copy the proposal for every project.

▸Do not waste Connects, on jobs that do not match your skills.

▸Do not set rates because it may bring clients who have no real budget.

▸Do not move conversation or payment outside Upwork because Upwork can ban your account.

▸Do not ignore client messages.

How to Stay Safe from Scams on Upwork
Do not move conversation outside Upwork. Do not disclose bank details to clients because that is a scam. Be careful of clients who ask you to complete a free test task or who want to pay through a method. From my experience if you see a client offering a $10,000 budget for a job on Upwork don’t get excited just because the budget is high. First check the client’s profile. Hiring history. If they have little hiring history, low total spending, few or no reviews and they haven’t spent a significant amount on Upwork be careful, before applying. A high job budget does not always mean the client is reliable. Always check the client’s reviews amount spent number of hires, payment method and hiring history before accepting the job.

Final Thoughts
Upwork demands effort than Fiverr but it gives you quality clients. Concentrate on building a profile and using your skills. With a profile you can earn an amount. I hope this post clarified Upwork for you and will help you on your journey.
