Ai vs Video Editing; AI will Replace Video Editors?

If you are a video editing learner searching up “AI will replace video editors” then you are in for news. Having worked on video editing for over three years now my insights have been quite enlightening on how AI and video editors can co exist.

AI vs Video Editing
AI vs video editing is not the end of the road, for video editing experts but rather a partnership. The tools can assist editors with production while the creators provide the aesthetic and direction needed to make the video engaging. In addition video editors who embrace the partnership will find themselves in demand compared to those who do not. As such it is important to not acknowledge the strengths of the tools but also to adopt them in order to stay productive meet client demands and increase your value as a professional.

AI for Video Editing in 2026BASICS 17
▸AI tools have come a way in the last few years. Some of the features these tools offer include:
▸Auto captioning and subtitling
▸Removing background noise
▸Auto trimming
▸Deleting parts of a video and identifying relevant parts in a much shorter timeframe
▸Removing background
▸Creating B-roll voice-over and auto-generated imagery
▸Resizing a single video into multiple sizes for Reels, Shorts and YouTube etc
▸These tasks are time-consuming but the good news is, with AI they can be done faster. As expected this creates a fear that AI will replace video editing experts.

AI’s Weaknesses for Video Editing in 2026
The weakness in the argument for AI replacing video editors is that AI tools are not yet intelligent enough. These tools can follow instructions. They cannot understand the requirements of the client or the video. Here’s what good video editing is about:

▸Editing video for the purpose of storytelling, pacing and finding the right tone.
▸Knowing the timing and rhythm of a video.
▸Understanding the taste, style and audience for a particular video.
▸Being able to meet clients’ personal, brand or creative requirements.
▸Being able to engage with clients understand their requirements and meet deadlines etc.

Although AI can create something decent the creation still needs to be curated by someone who understands people and what they like. Based on my experience clients often want someone they can build relationships with than just any video editing expert.

My Experience Using AI in Video Editing as a video editor I use AI to make me more productive. I use it in video editing tasks that’re repetitive or time-consuming such as captioning, background noise removal and auto-trimming. This way I get creative time to focus on the more important and creative aspects of video editing such as rhythm, pacing and style. My advice to video editing learners is to use AI to supplement their editing skills. Using it makes you more efficient, productive. Helps you meet client demands better. However it is important not to rely on it much since it cannot replace a human being with good aesthetic and directional sense. Someone who knows how to use AI will always have an advantage over someone who does not.
