I have been a freelance video editor for more than three years now and during this time I have had clients from all over the world learned a lot of lessons and seen a lot of changes in this space. If you are considering breaking into this space this article will give you an realistic view of the industry based on my personal experience as a freelancer.
Why video editing is a skill for a freelancer
As you may know video is everywhere. YouTubers, businesses, podcasters, coaches and brands all need videos. Most of them do not have the time or the skill to edit them which is why many turn to freelance editors to help them.
In my opinion video editing is one of the skills to break into as a freelancer. You do not need a degree a computer, some editing software, patience and practice. Many people worldwide are already doing this. It can be very rewarding when done right.
Video editing in 2026
There has been a change in the market for video editing freelance services. Here are the main points:
There is a boom in short form content: Reels, Tiktok and YouTube shorts are very popular and brands want video content to market their products.
AI tools are being integrated into the process: Some video editing tools like CapCut, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve have implemented AI to help editors with captioning, cutting and noise reduction.
Clients want delivery: Clients are now asking for delivery especially because of the AI tools.
AI video editing tools are in demand: Reports indicate that demand has risen substantially for AI video editing related skills on platforms like Upwork and Fiverr.
Important note :
However please note that AI tools are not going to replace an editor they are just going to make the editing process faster. It is still the skill of the editor which makes all the difference. If you learn how to use AI tools while improving your editing skills you will have an advantage over your competitors.
How much can you earn from video editing?
Well it all depends on your skill level. Which clients you can attract. From experience I know that a video editor can earn anywhere between $400 per month to $5000 or more depending on the clients and the work. Some video editors earn more than that when working with names or agencies. But there is no guarantee here since everything depends on your quality of work your clients, whether you work on an independent or agency basis and so forth. Most new editors do not make that much in the beginning. That is totally normal. Your income will grow as you gain experience and more clients on a consistent basis.
My Experience
When I started out I did not immediately go looking for clients. Instead I spent about six to seven months learning how to edit and practicing. During this time I made sure to watch editing tutorials before putting everything together and practicing myself until I felt confident enough to start looking for clients.
The next step was to compile my portfolio. This. Still is the most important step for me since a good portfolio tells potential clients what to expect from you and shows your skill level. As such I included some of the videos that I have edited and made sure to present them in an organized and clean way.
Where to Find Video Editing Clients
▸Discord : Many creators look for editors on Discord
▸Instagram : Use Instagram to do cold dm’s and showcase your work
▸Cold Email : Cold email outreach to YouTubers and businesses
▸Fiverr : Best for getting reviews
▸Upwork : Best for long term clients
▸Linkedin : Great for attracting business clients
What my client experience taught me
From experience I know that most clients are nice to work with and many are even long term clients. In words once you get clients used to your editing style they will always keep coming back for more.
Now the bad news is that the market is becoming very competitive. Many people are starting to offer editing services at low rates in order to get clients. I personally have a policy of not accepting clients at rates just to have clients. You will not be able to survive if you start undercutting yourself and worse you will set the bar for everyone. Set the rates that you want and make sure to stick to them so that clients know they are going to be working with an editor and the value of their money.
What is necessary to learn in Video Editing

▸AI Tools: Learn how to use AI tools in order to improve your speed, not your creativity

Work independently or with an agency?
You can either work as a freelancer or get a job with a video editing agency. Agencies provide work but you may get paid less compared to independent clients. Independent clients can pay well. You need to find them. Many video editors start with one option. Then move onto the other later and some even do both. It all depends on your preference.
